Process mapping is synonymous with creating a flowchart. Flowcharts are static pictures. There is no rich detail about the process behind the text represented in the diagram. Such is not the case with a process model. Models capture the details of each element of the flowchart. For tasks, this can included the rules for how long the task might take, other resources required, and associated costs. Decision diamonds include the rules for deciding which path will be taken and associated probabilities.
All this additional information allow us to actually simulate the process by introducing transactions into it per the rules by which the process is executed. These simulations uncover hidden costs and and opportunities for improvement that are unavailable in static process maps.
